Through The Lens 53 – Polar Express

Polar Express

During the night shoot at a Lerro Productions photo charter at the Reading and Northern, a family happened to walk by to see what was going on down at the station.  Pete talked them into posing for the photo line in a Polar Express like scene.  Just one of those happy accidents that occurs from time to time during photo shoots.

Through The Lens 52 – Great Smoky Mountains

Sunset - Clingman's Dome

Given the recent fires in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the surrounding area, I thought I’d share a favorite from my last trip.  I know the fire has caused significant damage, but the sun will rise again, the damage will be repaired and the forest will regrow.

Through The Lens 51 – Antietam Memorial Illumination

23,110

Every December on the first Saturday (unless postponed by weather) Antietam National Battlefield holds its annual Memorial Illumination.  23,110 luminaries are placed on the battlefield, one for each of the casualties.  I managed to get a photography permit for this year’s illumination and I’m looking forward to photographing it again.

Through The Lens 50 – Paphiopedilum Liemianum

Paphiopedilum liemianum

One of my other hobbies is growing orchids. Paphiopedilum or “slipper” orchids are a favorite of mine, particularly the sequentially blooming species of which this Paph. liemianum is a great example. It has been continuously blooming for almost 2 years!

Through The Lens 49 – Fall Sunsets

This is my favorite time of year for sunsets in the Mid-Atlantic region. We get this wonderful orange glow at the horizon that makes for some great photos.

Through The Lens 47 – Rosie the Riveter

Last year I had the opportunity to attend a Rosie the Riveter themed photo shoot.  I’m typically not interested in this sort of thing, but decided to attend on a whim and I’m glad I did because it was a lot fun. Tomorrow I get to participate in another with the same group and I can’t wait to see the scenes they have planned this time.

Through The Lens 46 – Happy Halloween!

The Grave Diggers from the Haunted Mansion sequence of the Boo To You parade is one of my favorite parts of Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. Capturing them making sparks on the pavement with their shovels requires a little flash blur.

Happy Halloween!

Through The Lens 45 – Mail Pouch Memories

Mail Pouch Memories

Sometimes you’re in the right place at the right time. Last fall, I was on my way from Cass, WV to Great Smoky Mountains National Park and happened to drive by this Mail Pouch Barn on a beautiful foggy morning. The owner graciously allowed me to photograph the barn. These roadside treasures of America’s past are disappearing quickly. When you see one, make sure to stop and photograph it because it may not be there the next time.
