Through The Lens 56 – Steam in the Snow

Mr. Helmstetter's New Barn

Helmstetter’s Curve on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.

Photographing steam locomotives in the snow is one of my favorite things to do. The snow acts as a giant reflector bouncing light into the running gear, allowing you to really see all of the detail and textures that is often missed. The cold weather also allows long white exhaust plumes to hang in the air.

Through The Lens 51 – Antietam Memorial Illumination

23,110

Every December on the first Saturday (unless postponed by weather) Antietam National Battlefield holds its annual Memorial Illumination.  23,110 luminaries are placed on the battlefield, one for each of the casualties.  I managed to get a photography permit for this year’s illumination and I’m looking forward to photographing it again.

Through The Lens 49 – Fall Sunsets

This is my favorite time of year for sunsets in the Mid-Atlantic region. We get this wonderful orange glow at the horizon that makes for some great photos.

Through The Lens 47 – Rosie the Riveter

Last year I had the opportunity to attend a Rosie the Riveter themed photo shoot.  I’m typically not interested in this sort of thing, but decided to attend on a whim and I’m glad I did because it was a lot fun. Tomorrow I get to participate in another with the same group and I can’t wait to see the scenes they have planned this time.

Through The Lens 45 – Mail Pouch Memories

Mail Pouch Memories

Sometimes you’re in the right place at the right time. Last fall, I was on my way from Cass, WV to Great Smoky Mountains National Park and happened to drive by this Mail Pouch Barn on a beautiful foggy morning. The owner graciously allowed me to photograph the barn. These roadside treasures of America’s past are disappearing quickly. When you see one, make sure to stop and photograph it because it may not be there the next time.

Through The Lens 40 – Antietam National Battlefield

Tomorrow is the 154th anniversary of the Battle of Antietam, so I thought a shot I took a couple of years ago of the 20th New York Monument would be appropriate.

Through The Lens 35 – Boeing Turns 100

B-29 Superfortress - Fifi

Today is the 100th Birthday of the Boeing Company, so I thought I’d share a photo of one of my favorite aircraft, the B-29 Superfortress which was first introduced in 1944, helping the United States win WWII.  Currently “Fifi” is the only flying B-29, but if things go well on Sunday, “Doc” will become the second flying example.

Through The Lens 34 – Monocacy Battlefield

14th New Jersey Monument - Sunrise

Since tomorrow is the 152nd Anniversary of the Battle of Monocacy, I thought I’d share one from the archives – Sunrise at the 14th New Jersey Regiment Monument taken on the morning of the 150th Anniversary, July 9th, 2014.
