Trip Report – 2016 & 2017 Cass Fall Photography Workshops
Yes, I am a year behind in editing. I recently finished up the photos from the 2016 & 2017 Cass Fall Photography Workshops. In 2016, I was on a flight back from Colorado on Saturday morning, so I missed most of Saturday, arriving just in time for the night session:
Sunday featured a photo excursion to Whittaker including scenes at Back Mountain Road Crossing:

In contrast to my late arrival in 2016, I made it in time for the Friday night welcome session for the first time ever in 2017. Clayton gave a great talk on seeing and on composition.
Saturday included a shoot at the Jail:
We did an outdoor flash lesson with Monica serving as our fly fisherman model:
Saturday ended with the traditional night session, this time at the water tank:
Sunday started with a session inside the company store:
And we ended the weekend with a real treat. We were granted access to the Ice House for a photo session:
Thanks again to Walter, Clayton, Monica, Matt and Andrew for all their hard work in putting together a great weekend. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us this fall.
Through The Lens 109 – Cass Fall Photography Workshop

Through The Lens 72 – Shay in the Rain
Taken a couple of years ago during a photo charter at the Cass Scenic Railroad, this shot of Shay #11 at the Bald Knob Wye has long been a favorite of mine. The fog in the distance and the rain streaking through the shot create a great mood for the shot if it had simply been cloudy.
When the passenger train stopped to drop us off at this location, it was drizzling rain. By the time we were in position under a dense canopy of spruce trees, the skies opened up and the rain started to pour down, which shows up nicely in this shot taken with a telephoto lens. As soon as the runby was over the rain stopped again. Couldn’t have worked out better if we planned it!
Through The Lens 43 – Cass Fall Photography Workshop
Its that time of year again. Tomorrow I’ll be attending the Cass Photography Workshop for the third year in a row. Even though I’m arriving a little late due to a prior commitment, I’m looking forward to seeing what Walter and Clayton have in store for us this year.
Through The Lens 26 – The Durbin Rocket
This weekend is the traditional weekend for Railfan Weekend at the Cass Scenic Railroad. With MSR&LHA opting to host a Members Weekend in June instead, I thought today would be an appropriate day to share one of my favorite photos. From last year’s Railfan Weekend.
With potentially rainy weather on the horizon and a desire to make the 5 hour drive home in relatively dry conditions, I almost made the turn east instead of west to Durbin on Sunday afternoon. Thankfully I decided to swing by Durbin because those of us who stuck around were treated to a great show.

Shay 4 rounds the bend at the bottom of the Whittaker S CurvesLast October I attended the fall edition of the Cass Photography Workshops hosted by Walter Scriptunas II and Clayton Spangler at the Cass Scenic Railroad. Walter and Clayton put on a fun event with a good mix of classroom teaching and shooting opportunities. If you’re in the Mid-Atlantic region, consider attending next year.If you’re not, find a workshop near you. If you haven’t attended one before, they’re a lot of fun. I always enjoy seeing how others shoot the same scene and find that it helps me be more creative on future shoots.
